OCTOBER 27: CCD SUCIAS VS. BRUISING ALTITUDE (DENVER ROLLER DOLLS “B” TEAM)

The rumors of the Sucias playing Bruising Altitude (Denver Roller Dolls’ “B” team) began in early August which were always repeated with a slight squeal. An established and well respected team wanted to play us! The excitement and fan girl energy fueled us through many demanding practices and scrimmage time. Our obsession of nailing down plays and skills became a daily, we trained extremely hard. You can imagine our all out enthusiasm when we finally set out on October 26th.

We were lucky enough to have our own personal Denver tour guide and derby guru, Muffin, at our side Saturday. Muffin, a former Duke City Derby member and now Mile High Club skater, agreed to take us around Denver and talk through endless hours of derby. We started the morning with a big breakfast at Annie’s shortly followed by a trip to The Shoppe. Our sweet tooth lingered in the quirky little bakery that even catered to gluten allergies. After many a creative cupcake we headed to Derbyville, a local skater-owned derby shop, where we left with our wallets a little lighter. Flossy McGrew’s costume shop and Arts Myths handmade mask shop were amazing and definitely put us in the Halloween mood.

Our team pad thai lunch, and pre-bout beauty routine flew by and before I knew it, we were walking into the Glitter Dome. The air was electric as we strapped on our skates and took to the sport court. There were butterflies in my stomach as the first whistle of the game blew and the first push from the pack was felt. Bruising Altitude meant business! They were definitely a force to be reckoned with. It was a different experience playing a team with a nationally high ranked varsity travel team and our final score proved that.

Whilst we may not have snagged the victory, we came back with a lot of knowledge. We found our strengths and our weaknesses that game and learned some things that will hopefully help us in the coming seasons. Not a bad way to end our away game season, if you ask me.
