Quicksilver and Akin Keister, both from central Texas’ Team Zebra, came to Las Cruces this weekend to teach CCD and El Paso Roller Derby (EPRD) refs a little more about reffing roller derby.
2 days, 4 hours of classroom training and 8 hours of scrimmage reffing put all kinds of scenarios – both genuine and scripted – in front of a crew of sixteen-plus referees from both leagues, and a few roller girls from Skate the Wilderness, the new league in Silver City, joined in too!
The camp ended with a mock-fight between Team White and Team Black, as Redd Dahlia grabbed Shady Shamrock from behind and dragged her to the floor. The skaters had a hard time pretending to throw punches, they were both laughing so hard. After a solid weekend of derby, both leagues’ officials are much more confident in their abilities, and are looking forward to putting their newly-acquired skills to the test on Feb 27th, when CCD faces EPRD at the El Paso Coliseum.
Thanks again to Quicksilver and Akin, for taking the time and having the patience to share your years of experience with a green crew!
