This past weekend marked Crossroads City Derby’s first ever Chile Verde bootcamp. “Chile Verde” is the name we call new skaters trying out for the league, many other leagues call this group “Fresh Meat.” The purpose of the camp was to teach new skaters skills they need to safely tryout and skate with the league. Almost thirty girls showed up and donned their gear on a chilly Saturday morning – very exciting!
On Saturday, the recruitment committee ran a four-hour practice starting off with an info session. New skaters were divided up and taught basic skills. Once skaters pass a basic skills test they will be allowed to skate with the league in addition to Chile Verde practices. We had two Chile Verdes that were able to pass their skills on day one. Congratulations ladies!
Chile Verde was out there again on Sunday. Practice was run by Hell Paseo and everyone’s thighs were burning by the end of the session… and probably still burning today! It was really encouraging to see fresh faces and be reminded of the excitement we all had when we started skating. The girls that came out to skate this year are gaining skills faster than any of us had imagined. They are a fearless bunch and I can speak for the whole league when I say we are looking forward to working with them this season. A draft for our home teams will occur at the beginning of April. Keep an eye out Las Cruces, CCD is growing!
