CCD's State of the Union 2018

CCD's State of the Union.... “I love roller derby.” This may not be a phrase commonly spoken in the in the average American household just yet, but I am happy to hear and say it on a regular basis. Why? It’s a game of strategy and brute force, agility and dynamism, individuality and teamwork; put everyone on roller skates, blow the whistle, and watch the organized chaos ensue. It pulls you in and makes you want more. That is why this sport continues to grow and gain a following at such a fast rate.
There are many reasons why people join roller derby: fun, exercise, and competitive energy, to name a few. This sport is all of these things and more! You have to make active decisions and take steps be a part of this sport, both on and off the track; learning to skate, understanding the rules, becoming a team player, and bettering yourself everyday. It takes commitment, determination, and heart.
Personally, I think what is more important than the reasons people join roller derby are the reasons people choose to stay. The roller derby community is a special thing; it’s open, friendly, and inclusive. Here at Crossroads City Derby, I believe we take it a step further; CCD is a family. Like any family, we have our ups and downs, but we know that we’re in this together. We share happiness, support, and goals, and we push each other to be better versions of ourselves.
Crossroads City Derby is eight years strong, and we are bigger and better than ever! Our membership is now international and consists of skaters from southern New Mexico, western Texas, and Mexico; some of whom have had the honor of representing their home countries this year at the Roller Derby World Cup. We have two home teams, the Spitfire Sallies and the Reguladies, who battle each other for dominance and home turf pride. We have two travel teams: Las Santas and the All-Star Sucias. Las Santas had an unprecedented undefeated season in 2017, and anticipate a repeat this year with new skaters wanting to prove themselves. The All-Star Sucias, currently ranked #90 out of 338 teams in WFTDA rankings, are starting their toughest season yet and are looking to dominate through hard work, commitment, and trust.
Our league is strong because of its foundation, and I thank our founders Puncher Villa, The Venomous DiMilo, and Hippie Check for creating this roller derby league which benefits so many women in Las Cruces and the surrounding areas. As President, I will continue to uphold the values they set forth and work to make this league the best it can be. Remember, there is a place at Crossroads City Derby for everyone, whether you're a skater, referee, NSO, volunteer, sponsor, or super fan! We love your support and look forward to seeing you at the track this 2018 season!
