If you would have told me a year ago that I would be bouting with my fellow Sucias against derby girls that have competed nationally, I would not have believed you. Further, if you would have told me we would face some of Duke City’s baddest bad asses, I would have laughed.
On November 19 the Sucias had the opportunity, no, the privilege, to bout with these girls. The best part, we made them work for every point. Due to circumstances beyond our control we had a team cancel on us with less than a month to find a replacement team to bout. In true “derby love” fashion Duke City scrambled and stepped up to our rescue. They pulled together a roster and headed our way. Yes, we were intimidated! The overriding sentiment, however, was sheer gratitude.
The Sucias came out blazing and were quickly greeted by some serious defense. It was a battle for both teams, and in the end, Duke City took the win. During the after party, there was derby love a plenty. Duke City showered us with compliments about how for a two year old team, we are amazing. They told us that monthly scrimmages between us would benefit both our leagues. I can honestly say that the seemingly tragic last minute cancellation turned out to be the best thing the Sucias could have asked for.
